When I first saw the explanation for this on pg 24 with the columns and pennies I was still confused. The birds are used as a tool by the authors to teach kids about binary. One thing that helped me when reading “Secret Coders” was the repetition of the birds. “Secret Coders” by Gene Luen Yang & Mike Holmes (pg 7,30,31) hook peterpan genderroles female character Watching “Hook”, I felt like I was missing out on the more important and interesting characters to make time for silly things like food fights and Pirate baseball. In the novel, Wendy has as much influence (if not more) as Peter and acts as his equal. In my opinion, I think the female characters are completely glossed over to make more time for Peter’s journey. Tarr goes on to say that the female characters are strong characters because they are able to hold on to the memories of family. Unfourtantley, her character is overshadowed by her love for Peter and her pining after him. Really the only notable female character was Tinkerbell who pushed Peter into remembering himself. Maggie is taken by Hook but is essentially ignored most of the movie.

Wendy and Moria appear only at the start and end of the movie with almost no impact on the overall story.

This is compared to the four female characters introduced: Wendy, Moira, Maggie, and Tinkerbell. Throughout the movie, you are introduced a largely male cast of pirates, the Lost Boys, Peter, and his son Jack. I thought it was interesting how in “Hook” the women have little to no impact on the overall story. Wendy is portrayed as one of the main characters in the story through her motherly care of the Lost Boys and Peter. Barrie puts a lot of emphasis on being a good mother and boys needing mothers. This quote stood out to me because of the obvious gender roles that continue to be prominent in modern-day interpretations of the classic stories of “Peter Pan.” In the novel, J.M. “Shifting Images of Adulthood” by Carol Tarr

She puts it on him by saying he is the one who chose to participate and that he can try to justify it all he wants but ultimately, his role helped lead to the murder of an innocent man. I would have thought he would have been tried for a lesser sentence since he wasn’t being accused of actually murdering anyone, but Petrocelli argues that his part in the crime is what led to the murder. When I first started reading the book, I couldn’t understand why Steve was being tried for felony murder if he is only accused of making sure no one was in the store. She also appeals directly to Steve by saying that he cannot separate himself from this crime “no matter how many moral hairs he splits.” I think it is interesting how Petrocelli connects him to the crime through his own morality. She says that Steve made a “moral decision” to help commit this crime. What is interesting is the way she plays on morality. She is claiming that Steve is as much a part of the crime as anyone in this story. monster hummanity raceĭuring the State’s closing arguments, Petrocelli says this quote about Steve Harmon. I think it is important to focus on this blatant racism that takes place in our justice system and to see how the treatment of minorities as less than human can continue a vicious cycle of crime and incarceration.
MONSTER WALTER DEAN MYERS QUOTES THAT SHOW CATHARSIS TRIAL
Steve’s humanity is repeatedly ignored in this trial as he becomes just a criminal or a “monster” in the eyes of the justice system. He is presumed to be guilty before the trial even begins because he is being associated with other young black men who have committed crimes. I think that “Monster” is showing this cycle through Steve’s perspective on the trial. Looking at our current justice system, you can clearly see a pattern of minorities being incarcerated more often than someone who is white. The idea that these young black men are being treated as less than human and that is what could have caused them to commit the crime in the first place. Engles and Kory suggest that the cycle of the justice system and institutionalized racism could be the bigger focus. It is meant to be a view into the thoughts and feelings of a young black man on trial. One thing that stood out to me throughout the book was that Steve’s guilt is not the main purpose of this story. I thought this was an interesting take on “Monster” by Walter Myers. “‘What did she see?’: The White Gaze and Postmodern Triple Consciousness in Walter Dean Myers’s Monster” by Tim Engles and Fern Kory (pg.
